Every August, we recognize National Child Support Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of child support and the vital role both parents play in a child’s life. Child support is more than a legal responsibility—it is a commitment to ensuring that children have access to the financial, emotional, and educational resources they need to grow into healthy, confident, and successful adults. When parents work together to provide consistent support, children are more likely to perform well in school, develop positive relationships, and enjoy greater emotional and financial stability. National Child Support Awareness Month also highlights the many programs and services available to help families establish, modify, and manage child support while promoting responsible parenting and positive co-parenting relationships.

Supporting children is a responsibility that extends beyond parents—it is something the entire community can take part in. Grandparents, seniors, relatives, neighbors, teachers, and community organizations all play an important role in helping children feel loved, safe, and encouraged. Seniors, in particular, have a lifetime of wisdom, experience, and compassion to share. Whether it’s reading to a grandchild, volunteering at a local school or community center, mentoring a young person, or simply spending quality time with family, older adults help create strong bonds that positively influence a child’s growth and development. Their guidance, patience, and life lessons provide children with valuable support that can last a lifetime while also helping seniors stay socially connected, active, and engaged.
National Child Support Awareness Month is also a reminder that healthy families build healthier communities.

Parents can strengthen their families by maintaining open communication, keeping child support obligations up to date, participating in their children’s education and activities, and creating positive co-parenting relationships whenever possible. Communities can make a difference by sharing information about available family resources, supporting local youth programs, encouraging responsible parenting, and creating safe environments where children can thrive. Every act of kindness, every shared resource, and every effort to support a child contributes to a brighter future. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed, every family feels supported, and every community grows stronger—one child, one family, and one positive action at a time.
